Luna Park Melbourne, a treasured amusement park in Australia, opened its doors in 1934. It welcomed visitors with the usual roller coasters and games, carousels and carnival treats, but the park had a “dark” side: The Ghost Train. Today, the Ghost Train is one of one of the only original dark rides left in the world. Once aboard the Ghost Train, visitors are whisked through dark rooms of ghastly ghouls and chilling scares. This year, the iconic attraction was refurbished for its 90th anniversary, just in time for Halloween.

The Ghost Train renovation was led by designer Edward Felix, who combined 3D printing and hand-crafting approaches to revitalize the ride. According to Bambu Lab, who supplied the 3D printers that Felix used, using 3D printers helped the team work within budget constraints. With Bambu Lab X1C printers, Felix and his designers created decorations, whole set pieces, and custom parts for the ride.。

First, the team took a 3D scan of the entire ride, so they could experiment with the redesign. This way, they could try designs out without using physical resources. Once the printing began, the project came to life. The Bambu Lab X1C printer uses FFF technology and can print with multiple colors. With this tool, Felix’s team created gas lamp sconces, candelabras, cases for LED lighting, and more. The 3D printers even churned out a full faux library!
Felix explained that 3D printing allowed them to customize their designs with incredible detail, and that wasn’t the only benefit. “Using Bambu Lab 3D printers allowed us to create an entirely new set of experiences for the ride while ensuring all parts were easy to maintain and replace,” Felix said. “The printers worked tirelessly, producing everything from custom book spines in the new library scene to realistic candle holders and even structural elements hidden from view.”

The team also brought in artisans to complete the ride with a hand-crafted touch. Painters hand-painted wallpaper, spooky portraits, and pictures. This blend of innovative technology and traditional techniques helped the team maintain the Ghost Train spirit. “Revitalizing the Ghost Train was a rare opportunity to honor a historical treasure while injecting new life into it,” said Felix. “We wanted to stay true to the ride’s roots while ensuring it remains an exciting experience for guests of all ages.

Nathan Klassen, CEO of Luna Park Melbourne, exclaimed his appreciation for the project. “This renovation is more than just an update – it’s a celebration of Luna Park’s rich history and a commitment to keeping that history alive in a way that modern audiences can appreciate. We’re thrilled to have worked with Edward and his team on this project.” To learn more about the project,
